Hydraulic Equipment Supermarkets was first formed in 1965 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire before moving to Gloucester in 1966.

The company grew in size over the coming years, opening a second branch in Leeds in 1970, followed shortly after by its third branch in Birmingham in 1976 and finally, in 1982, it opened its fourth branch in Gateshead in order to better serve its growing customer base in the North East of England.

The Gateshead depot continued to develop and grow and, in 1998, moved to a new and improved site in Durham and has now, in December 2019, moved to its current location in Spennymoor.
